Keynote Speaker: Ellen Galinsky
Ellen Galinsky, President and Co-Founder of Families and Work Institute (FWI), helped establish the field of work and family life while at Bank Street College of Education, where she was on the faculty for twenty-five years. Ms. Galinsky holds a Master of Science degree in Child Development/Education from Bank Street College of Education, a Bachelor of Arts degree in Child Study from Vassar College and numerous honorary doctoral degrees. Her more than forty-five books and reports include the highly acclaimed Mind in the Making: The Seven Essential Life Skills Every Child Needs, Ask The Children and the now classic The Six Stages of Parenthood. She has published over 125 articles in academic journals, books and magazines. She served as the elected President of the National Association for the Education of Young Children, the largest professional group of early childhood educators. A popular keynote speaker, she appears regularly at national conferences, on television and in the media, including the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric, World News Tonight and Oprah.

Dr. Susan Burns, Associate Professor of Early Childhood Education at George Mason University, focuses her research on the development and learning of young children including children with diverse abilities , those living in poverty, and those from multilingual and multicultural backgrounds. Dr. Burns has expertise in the areas of language and early literacy development. She has numerous publications presenting her research in these areas. A former employee at the National Research Council, she is a coeditor of Eager to Learn: Educating Our Preschoolers, Preventing Reading Difficulties in Young Children, and Starting Out Right: A Guide to Promoting Children's Reading Success, all publications of the National Academy Press of the National Academies of Science.
Lisa GuernseyLisa Guernsey, Director of the Early Education Initiative at New America Foundation, focuses on how to scale up high-quality learning environments for young children, birth through age 8. In her research and writing – including editing the Early Ed Watch blog – she works to elevate dialogue about early childhood education and spotlight new approaches for narrowing the achievement gap. Ms. Guernsey’s most recent book is Screen Time: How Electronic Media – From Baby Videos to Educational Software – Affects Your Young Child (Basic Books, 2012).

Colleen VeselyDr. Colleen Vesely, Assistant Professor of Early Childhood Education in the College of Education and Human Development at George Mason University, teaches graduate courses focused on the connections between early childhood education, families, and communities, and the research methods used to understand these areas of study. Dr. Vesely’s research examines the experiences of diverse, low-income families with young children as they negotiate parenthood and navigate major social systems including the early childhood education system. Her most recent research, which is funded by the Office of Child Care through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, uses qualitative methods to understand on how African and Latin American immigrant mothers select early childhood care and education for their young children, as well as how they use child care subsidies and other governmental supports to develop economic self-sufficiency
Amanda SchwartzDr. Amanda Schwartz has worked as an educator and Federal contractor for the last 17 years focusing on special education, early childhood education, and health and safety. As a team member on several Federal projects, Dr. Schwartz works as a technical assistance provider, resource developer, researcher, and policy analyst. Throughout her career, Dr. Schwartz has developed training opportunities and publications to facilitate the use of research-based interventions and support data-driven decision-making by practitioners, technical assistance providers, policymakers, and Federal staff in the Department of Education and the Department of Health and Human Services.
